A digital transformation journey is complex because it depends on multiple interlinked elements at every stage. Along with technology, data, and infrastructure, managing change is critical for obtaining the expected business outcomes. Driving the program with agile methodology, having checkpoints at every stage, and the acceptability of the new digitised processes by people are vital factors determining the quality of delivery. Keeping the consumer mindset in view and seeking a capable team to support the program are fundamental for the successful delivery of a program. Though several aspects contribute to the successful delivery of a transformation program, three are the most important.1. Obtaining Desired Business Outcomes Obtaining desired business outcomes is the goal of any transformation program. The decisive point for beginning a transformation program is to have the same understanding of the business outcomes and desired Return-On-Investment (ROI) between the client and implementation partner. The IIIT-Hyderabad’s incubator and EPAM Systems, Inc., digital transformation services and product engineering company, have selected seven startups for the EPAM Social Impact Innovation Programme.The programme is aimed at supporting these green startups with an equity-free grant of up to ₹5 lakh and incubation support.The Atal Incubation Centre-IIITH Foundation incubator will help the startups build their products and help them find market and access to funds.<h5 style="text-align: justify;">Fighting climate crisis</h5>The shortlisted startups included MedCuore Medical Solutions; Green Trek Research and Development; Greenovate Solutions; MuddleArt; Zodhya Technologies; Envoprotect LLP; and Panjurli Labs.“Supporting the Green Tech revolution is essential to help India secure a foothold in the Fourth Industrial Revolution and help us fight the climate crisis,” Ramesh Loganathan, Director of AIC-IIIT-H, said. The AIC-IIITH has run five cohorts and supported about 40 with incubation support and a funding of ₹2 crore. India now has about 25 senseis who are actively growing the community and acting as mentors and coaches for game participants. One such sensei is engineer Varma Datla says, “Coding DOJO is three hours of fun, where you get away from your daily grind, meet people from other projects or even accounts, look at technical problems ‘right here, right now’ and straightaway get to solving them. It’s a competition where you see your and others’ results right at the end of the game, and you’re always curious about your colleagues’ algorithms and strategies.

“From the engineer’s perspective, Coding DOJO is fun — and that makes it good from the business perspective. When we were just starting to conduct these meetups, we had only a few participants. But word of mouth got out, and we’ve grown quickly. We bring in new games and mix up players who know different technologies to keep their interest.”
Community manager Sameena Ali says, “Under the Engineering Excellence program in India, we work with various platforms, especially Coding DOJO. Indians love to communicate, experiment with new things and improve their skills. It’s just a part of our culture. We are trying to build a Culture of Togetherness to promote a spirit of teamwork amongst our employees. We got started in March of this year and conduct at least two meetings a month. The entire EPAM India team is grouped into 6 'houses', who participated in a string of friendly competitions to win the Best House of the year. Amongst these competitions, ENGX Coding Dojo was one of the major tournaments. Over 12 weeks, 600 employees from 6 houses participated and cheered their teams in this tournament. The tournament was won by Aishwarya Bommisetty, Praveen Mustepally, and Rajeev Marrapu.”

In its classical Japanese sense, a dojo is a place for developing martial arts skills — for everyone, from toddlers to the highest-ranking masters. Coding DOJO does the same thing, only with engineering mastery. It’s a virtual environment where engineers perfect their programming skills. As with martial arts dojos, Coding DOJO welcomes developers of all levels, from newcomers to seasoned professionals.
This is important for EPAM, because we create complex solutions that are constantly changing — and the platforms, languages, methodologies and industries change along with them. It is critical that we, in turn, constantly improve our skills.

Software engineers don’t only code – they often play other critical roles and functions in many different capacities – including business analysis, testing, leadership, DevOps and maintenance. That’s why Sanchit Balchandani, EPAM’s lead software engineer in India, explores the ways in which empathy has helped grow his career and how it can help fellow engineers build better client relationships, create better products, build great teams and chart successful careers.
How often do we really practice empathy in our lives? I often find that whilemost of us understand the importance of empathy, unconsciously we seem to avoid being empathetic at the most important moments.
I’ve been working in the IT industry for about 11 years now, during which I’ve worked with people from different geographies. Over the past four years, I’ve also been leading small to mid-size software development teams. From my experience working with people from different cultures and at different levels, whether it’s peers, managers, senior management or customers, the one thing that makes people stand out is empathy. In this article I’ll share why empathy is a crucial skill for a software engineer.
A clarifying point before we begin -- sympathy is not empathy. Sympathy is more about feeling sorry for someone, whereas empathy is about putting yourself in the other person’s shoes and understanding their situation. Empathy opens the door to a range of long-lasting emotions and feelings.
So, what does this have to do with software engineering?
Beyond coding, software engineers play a critical role in many different capacities such as business analysis, testing, leadership, DevOps and maintenance. Each of these roles involves interaction with people. Wherever you deal with people, empathy is vital. Empathy can help you build client relations, foster a more inclusive team environment, create better products and grow your career. Let’s look at a few examples. <h6>WORKING WITH FELLOW ENGINEERS</h6>
Let’s look at how we do Pull Request (PR) Reviews. Often, they end up in unnecessary conflicts. PR reviews are not about finding ‘X’ number of issues in someone else's PR; they’re about collaboration and creating a good coding practice. Any conflicts can be avoided or resolved if the PR review process involves empathy.
As a developer, when you code with empathy in mind, you take greater responsibility and do your best to reduce small and avoidable errors on your end before forwarding it for review. Similarly, as a PR reviewer, empathetic understanding can help you collaborate better and reach solutions faster.<h6>INTERACTING WITH CUSTOMERS</h6>
Customer interactions can sometimes be tricky for software developers. Engineers tend to think from a technical standpoint, and this can differ from a customer’s understanding of things, especially if they don’t have a technical background. In these instances, it is the developer's responsibility to understand, ask questions, listen and adapt. The more you hear, the more informed you will be and the better the product will turn out, with fewer iterations. When providing updates to the customer, we need to help them understand the situation without using technical terms. This all makes things easier for both clients and the developers in the long run. <h6>LEADING A TEAM</h6>
Empathy is a must-have quality for modern-day industry leaders. As a leader, you work with people who have different skillsets, temperaments, backgrounds and cultures. By applying more empathy, you will be better equipped to:<ul><li>Influence others more effectively</li><li>Have conversations that will bring out the best in your team</li><li>Motivate people around you and help them grow</li></ul><h6>CONDUCTING INTERVIEWS</h6>
Empathy can be critical in helping an interviewer identify a candidate's potential. You will put the candidate at ease, give them enough time to answer, encourage them to share their stories, ask the right questions and keep your own reactions in check. It will also help you ask questions that are not binary but ask for their experiences, so you get the best out of the candidate – hearing what they have prepared to say, but hopefully also hearing them speak from the heart. By being more empathetic you will better understand how they think, behave and make decisions.<h6>HOW TO PRACTICE EMPATHY</h6>
If you’ve read to this point, I hope it’s evident that empathy is not only a feeling but a much-needed skill in today's software engineer's profile. Like any other skill, this will need practice. Personally, I analyze some of my conversations retrospectively and reflect on what could be done better next time.
You can also start practicing empathy with the task at hand. When you are creating a product, keep the end user in mind -- how they would interact with it, what they really need and what would make it successful. Other simple ways include adding API documentation which makes it easier for others to use your APIs and, of course, making your code readable so that another developer won’t have a hard time understanding it.
Ultimately, empathy is an acquired skill that will reward you with trust, clarity and perspective.

Software engineers don’t only code – they often play other critical roles and functions in many different capacities – including business analysis, testing, leadership, DevOps and maintenance. That’s why Sanchit Balchandani, EPAM’s lead software engineer in India, explores the ways in which empathy has helped grow his career and how it can help fellow engineers build better client relationships, create better products, build great teams and chart successful careers.

EPAM India News | Celebrating 5 Years of EPAM India

In the 5 years since our inception, team India has grown from strength to strength. Expanding clientele, technological expertise, and employee strength; EPAM India is poised to drive the global vision of ‘engineering the future’ to greater heights. Here is a recap of our journey.

Celebrating 5 Years of EPAM India - 2020

The garage is a busy place — and not just because of all the innovation, testing, and thinking that happens there. Guests can range from EPAM’s developers, coders, and engineers, to top management, important clients, and ordinary students. The community is working on a host of projects, some of which are mentioned below:<ul><li>Air Pollution Tracker - The project is developed in the view to create a system that can monitor and control air pollution within a premise.</li><li>Gross Company Happiness Meter - Monitoring emotions among the employees by reading facial vectors through camera captured images</li><li>BET (Book EPAM Transport) App – An internal “uber” app that allows employees to book EPAM transport cabs for drops and pick ups to nearest metro stations</li><li>Guide in the Dark – A guide for the visually impaired to assess their environment and give them voice based inputs</li></ul>
The community also conducted an Engineers’ Week in September 2019. They hosted a slew of workshops and activities aimed at learning and collaboration. Global EPAM speakers were invited to speak about new trends in Design thinking. They also conducted a Design Thinking workshop for EPAM India Garage innovators and EPAM kids. During this week, EPAM India Garage also did an exhibition demonstration of all their projects.

In Japan, a DOJO is a place to train, compete and achieve ranks in martial arts. In our case, the DOJO is where programmers become stronger by exchanging knowledge and just having a good time. Coding DOJO can take different forms. One example is how developers get together to do kata – simple tasks for improving their engineering mastery. Another form is Codenjoy, or coding for fun, where participants create bots and compete in simple games. Coding DOJO at EPAM is something much bigger than just fun meetups. At EPAM India Coding DOJO needed only six months to become a large-scale practice. We did a total of 16 events with about 800 participants in 2019!

EPAM India’s Dojo Culture

The Testing community is one of the bigger communities at EPAM India. They are an active bunch, whose love for code transcends everything else. They had an action packed 2019, where a lot of community members organized many tech talks and collaborative learning events. Their sessions covered a range of topics like:<ul><li>API Testing series workshop - where they focused each week on different types of API testing. They brought in SMEs who covered the entire gamut of Functional, Performance, Automation and Security testing under the API series. Speakers used live case studies as demo examples to make their sessions more relatable and easier to comprehend.</li><li>Internal Test-Auto-Thon, where close to 25 teams participated in it. This was basically a hackathon for software test engineers where participants were required to implement an automation and integration workflow involving multiple test scenarios for a web application. The test scenarios include Web UI scenarios (desktop & mobile) as well web service end point(s). Of the 25 teams who participated, the top 4 teams were chosen to represent EPAM India at the All-India Testautothon competition organised by Step-In across three cities - Hyderabad, Bangalore, and Pune.</li></ul>

For the external events, the community forged new partnerships with Null Hyderabad & Step-In communities, who designed interesting community meetup experiences for us. 
With Step-In, EPAM engineers participated in the all-India Testautothon contests in Bangalore, Pune and Hyderabad. The team at Hyderabad won the second place in this testautothon. Congratulations to Srinivas Jonnala, Satya Prasad
During the months of September & October, the community did two events with Null Hyderabad - one on IOT Communication Security. The other Null event was the community's 100th event, where EPAMers Harikrishna Valugonda and Sai Palvai took key sessions. Hari spoke about how to look for sensitive information like cloud secret keys, passwords, etc., from the git repositories of an application. He demonstrated manual ways to obtain the info and using some automated tools. Sai spoke about escaping docker containers, where he demonstrated techniques on how to escape attackers who access the file system by exploiting various misconfigurations inside the docker.
